Cardinal Principles

These principles are also called the fundamental principles of Homeopathy. Homeopathy asserts that there are principles that govern the practice of
medicine. Up till the time of Hahnemann, no principles of medicine were recognized. The old conventional school declared that the practice of
medicine depends entirely upon experience, upon what can be found out by giving medicines to the sick. Their shifting methods and theories, and rapid
discoveries and abandonment of the same, fully attest to the sincerity of their acknowledgment and declarations.

Homeopathy differs from conventional medicine at this point, and so in this manner the great division between the two schools is affected. Homeopathy
as a medical science has a philosophy of its own and has certain fundamental principles on which its practice is based.
These are
• Law of Similia
• Law of Simplex
• Law of Minimum
• Doctrine of Drug Proving
• Theory of Chronic Disease
• Theory of Vital Force
• Doctrine of Drug-Dynamization

Basic Law of Homeopathy.
The term “Similia Similibus Curentur” means Let likes be treated by likes.
According to this principle: A medicine is able to treat a condition which it produces when administered to apparently healthy subjects during proving.
Before Hahnemann, Hippocrates also mentioned the concept of treating similar by similar in 400 BC. Some other physicians who mentioned the
concept of similars before Hahnemann were Paracelsus, Boulduc, Detharding, Bertholon, Thoury, Von Stoerck and Stahl.

Aphorism 26 of the Organon of medicine described nature’s law of cure as,
“A weaker dynamic affection is permanently extinguished in the living
organism by a stronger one, if the latter (whilst diAering in kind) is very similar
to the former in its manifestations.”
If there are two forces in the body, the Stronger one will always remove the
weaker one, so our Vital force has to be stronger than the disease force.

If disease force is stronger, then we will fall ill.

Hahnemann advised medicines to be prescribed in a way so the vital force
is boosted to be stronger than the disease force & therefore, can remove the
same from the body.
In Aphorism 272 Fifth Edition, Organon of medicine, Dr Hahnemann
mentions the law of Simplex as “In no case is it requisite to administer more
than one single, simple medicinal substance at one time.”

Dr. Hahnemann advises use of a single medicine at a time for treatment. In Aphorism 273 Hahnemann strictly mentioned:
In no case under treatment is it necessary, and therefore not permissible, to administer to a patient more than one single, simple medicinal substance at one time. It is inconceivable how the slightest doubt could exist as to whether it was more consistent with nature and more rational to prescribe a single, simple medicine at one time in a disease or a mixture of several differently acting drugs.

It is absolutely not allowed in homeopathy, the one true, simple, and natural art of healing, to give the patient at one time two different medicinal substances.”

But WHY Single remedy at a time?
Because, during drug proving, drugs were proved singly, and symptoms observed were compiled into the Materia Medica. Two or more medicines when given to a patient together may alter or hinder each other’s actions and may also cause harm to the patient. At any given time, only one remedy can be exactly similar to the presenting disease condition of the patient. If the physician administers more than one remedy at a time, he will not be able to ascertain which medicine has cured the patient. Administration of more than one remedy may also produce medicinal symptoms, which may be harmful to the patient.

In Aphorism 275 Dr. Hahnemann mentions the law of minimum as:
“The suitableness of a medicine for any given case of disease does not depend on its accurate homeopathic selection alone, but likewise on the
proper size, or rather smallness, of the dose. If we give too strong a dose of a medicine that may have been even quite homeopathically chosen for the
morbid state before us, it must, notwithstanding the inherent beneficial character of its nature, prove injurious by its mere magnitude and by the
unnecessary, too strong impression that, by virtue of its homeopathic similarity of action, it makes upon the vital force that it attacks and, through the vital force, upon those parts of the organism that are the most sensitive and are already most aAected by the natural disease.”

Further, Arndt-Schulz law can be best described as
The pharmacologic principle of homeopathy was given to 19th-century scientists by Hugo Schulz and Rudolf Arndt.

According to this law, “weak stimuli accelerate physiologic activity, medium
stimuli inhibit physiologic activity, and strong stimuli halt physiologic
activity.”

As an Interesting fact the law of least action, given by the French mathematician Maupertius, mentions
“The quantity of action necessary to affect any change in the nature is the least possible, an infinitesimal.”

Next on our list is the Doctrine of Drug Proving.
Drug proving is a systemic investigation and evaluation of the disease. producing power of a substance on healthy human beings of different age
groups and people from different places.

Dr. Hahnemann mentions the Drug Proving in Aphorisms 105-145.

He defines drug proving as the method of “acquiring a knowledge of the instruments intended for the cure of the natural diseases, investigating the pathogenetic power of the medicines, in order, when called on to cure, to be able to select from among them one, from the list of whose symptoms an artificial disease may be constructed, as similar as possible to the totality of the principal symptoms of the natural disease sought to be cured.”

Drug proving, also known as Human Pathogenetic Trial (HPT), is a unique way of getting and confirming the effect of a drug or medicinal substance by giving the drug to healthy human volunteers and bringing out their pathogenetic effects. The symptoms brought out by patients on ingestion of the drugs are noted and compiled as a first step to introduce that drug in a materia medica.



In this context HA Roberts says,
A drug is any material agent, in whatever attenuated form, the ingestion of which is capable of so disturbing this balance of the vital forces that the
functioning of one or more organs of the body is no longer carried out to the best of the whole; and any material substance capable of so acting on the
living organism is a drug.

Hence, drugs are essentially destructive; therein lies the difference between drugs and foods—drugs are destructive, while foods are constructive. Both drugs and foods act upon the vital force that rules in all animate beings.”

In Chronic diseases Hahnemann says:
“It was a continually repeated fact that the non-venereal chronic diseases, after being time and again removed homeopathically by the remedies fully
proved up to the present time, always returned in a more or less varied form and with new symptoms, or reappeared annually with an increase of complaints.

This fact gave me the first clue that the homeopathic physician with such a chronic (non-venereal) case—yea, in all cases of (non-venereal) chronic
disease—has not only to combat the disease presented before his eyes and must not view and treat it as if it were a well-defined disease, to be speedily and permanently destroyed and healed by ordinary homeopathic remedies, but also that he has always to encounter only some separate fragment of a more deep-seated original disease.”
After 12 years of investigations and study, Hahnemann published his observations in his book “The Chronic Diseases.”

In this book, he mentions chronic diseases were caused by chronic miasms. In his theory of chronic diseases, Hahnemann explains why venereal and
non-venereal diseases do not respond to carefully selected constitutional remedies and what must be done in such cases.

All such diseases he attributed to a deeper malady, which he named miasm. He mentions, “They must therefore have for their origin and foundation
constant chronic miasms.

He divided miasms into 3 types as
• Psora
• Sycosis
• Syphilis

Dr. Hahnemann mentions Psora as the fundamental cause and producer of innumerable forms of diseases. Dr. Hahnemann describes it as “Fig Wart Disease”, he explains it arises due to ill treatment, e.g., suppression of disease.

External removal or suppression of disease causes it to move towards a deeper organ and gives rise to a deeper malady, which he refers to as SYCOSIS.
The next chronic miasm, which is more widely spread than the fig-wart disease and which for four centuries has been the source of many other chronic ailments, is the miasm of the venereal disease, the chancre-disease – Syphilis

Hahnemann says that even a selected anti-miasmatic remedy needs to be given in an appropriate dosage to get the right action.

Hahnemann mentions the vital force in Aphorism 9 as “the dynamis that animates the material body (organism) rules with unbounded sway and retains all the parts of the organism in admirable, harmonious, vital operation, as regards both sensations and functions, so that our indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely employ this living, healthy instrument for the higher purpose of our existence.”

In Aphorism 10, Sixth Edition, he mentions, “The material organism, without the vital force, is capable of no sensation, no function, no self-preservation;
it derives all sensation and performs all the functions of life solely by means of the immaterial being (the vital principle) which animates the material organism in health and in disease.”

H. A. Roberts, in his book ‘The principles and Art of Cure by Homeopathy,’ mentions, “We recognize life in three parts: the body, the mind, and the spirit. This is a trinity, and this trinity is always present in all life and in some form in every part of our organism. These forces react in sympathy and are
interdependent.

‘No organ, no tissue, no cell, no molecule, is independent of the activities of the others, but the life of each one of these elements is merged into the life of the whole. The unit of human life cannot be the organ, the tissue, the cell, the molecule, or the atom, but the whole organism, the whole man.’ ”

It’s the basic force that makes a person live and perform all life functions, including fighting oA diseases.

Dr. J. T. Kent says:
“All that there is of the soul operates and exists within every part of the human body, and thus it is that simple substance acts as a vital force.

But when the opposite is true, when the vital force from any cause withdraws from the body, we see that the forces that are in the body being turned loose are destructive.

“When these forces are not dominated and controlled by the vital force the body tends to decay at once.”

So we see that the vital force is constructive or formative, and in its absence there is death and destruction.

The material organism, without the vital force, is capable of no sensation, no function, and no self-preservation; it derives all sensation and performs all
the functions of life solely by means of the immaterial being.

Doctrine of Drug-Dynamization Hahnemann noticed that aggravation of ailments occurred many times
during application of the proven similar drugs on the patient for cure. He started reducing and diluting the drug on a definite ratio and found that the
results obtained were much better. He continued this process of dilution and named this process of drug dynamization 'potentization.'

According to Dr. Stuart Close, “Homeopathic potentization is a mathematico-mechanical process for the reduction, according to scale, of crude, inert or poisonous medicinal substances to a state of physical solubility, physiological assimilability, and therapeutic activity and harmlessness, for use as homeopathic healing remedies.”
